One day we visited a health clinic for moms and babies. It is run by an American couple who are doing great things for really rural and poor Dominicans, like organizing regular garbage service, immunizations, and free medical. They had about 40 Kashmir goats, and this was one.
I hired a driver to drive me from the northern coast down to Santiago. Sue, Dennis and Anne took the bus back because they thought that the drivers were too dangerous. I'll admit, they were the worst drivers that I've ever seen.
Basically, the driver would just drive along until I asked him to stop somewhere. We went along like this for about 40 miles total. I found that there are a lot of advantages to taking pictures by foot. You get a lot better chance to meet the people, instead of jumping out of a car, taking a picture or two and jumping back in and speeding away.
All of the little shops in this area were very colorful and full of character. What is it about old painted wood that I love so much.
You"ve got to see this!
