Anne, Vicky (Anne's co-worker), and I went camping last Friday evening. First of all, Vicky hadn't been camping in well over 10 years. Plus, when she had been camping, it had meant that she would go to a campground and camp with all the other campers. Anne has just about as much experience camping as Vicky it would seem. She also thinks of camping in terms of camp grounds that have toilets, running water, and firewood for sale, etc.
My mission from the get go, was to drive into the mountains, find my own idyllic campsite, away from the campgrounds, rangers and all rules that make camping less enjoyable. In order to make this happen, it took a good amount of convincing the girls that camping away from campgrounds really isn't that bad. This was the site that we finally stopped at. There was a little fire between Anne and Vicky that doesn't really show up in the picture. We ate great and I slept the whole night through, like a rock.
The next morning, we got up and drove to a trail head just over the summit of Hwy. 2. We did a brutal 2.3 mile 2500 +/- ft. elevation gain hike that ended at two beautiful lakes.
This island reminds me of the Caribbean.
These hills made the backcountry snowboarder in me come alive. The avalanche shoots on the second ridge back are similar to what Anne and I skied during our time in Bulgaria.
You"ve got to see this!

Hey Pat that is the only way camping should be:) Except when there is 30/40 mile/hour wind gusts and torrid rain like I got when we camped on the Oregon coast...great idea:)
